Why go on a retreat?Roz writes...
"The ministry of Cleopas came into existence because of a life changing opportunity that came about for me. At the time I was working in a demanding leadership role in a Christian ministry context, within which I had become emotional, physically and spiritually exhausted. I needed rest, but I didn't recognize this and had to have an insightful leader point it out. He suggested going on a retreat. I had no clue why a retreat was what I needed and, if truth be told, I was a little unsure of the idea. But I went, and stepped into 5 days that were to change my life. The location was beautiful, which was a true joy. More importantly, I was cut off from all the demands and challenges of my life and work. I had to leave my normal day to day life outside the front door. This was crucial, as the main purpose of retreat is to create mental and physical space to be with the Lord. He longs for our attention, which in truth he often only gets in short, snatched moments. By going on retreat, where we have 'parked' all the normal stuff of life, we can slow down and turn our full attention towards listening for the Lord and to the longings and needs of our own soul. Our phone is off, our computer is at home. At last we can be fully present to the Lord." |
What people say about our retreats...Dr. Duffy Robbins, Author & Speaker
Professor of Christian Ministries, Grove City College, Grove City, PA “I am absolutely delighted to commend to you my dear friend, Roz Stirling. What she brings to the church is refreshment, wisdom, experience, pastoral skill and a heart authentically in love with Jesus... Read more
I like to say, “she couples everything good about Ireland with everything hopeful and healing about Jesus.” We have shared ministry on a number of occasions, and every time I am impressed with the depth of her message, the clarity of her communication and the sensitivity of her heart. How exciting to see her ministry getting more exposure on this side of the Atlantic. I would strongly encourage anyone to join her in a retreat experience. It will be an opportunity for deep, memorable, Christ-centered refreshment.” |
Leaders need retreat space! The call to Christian ministry is an privilege and an honour. It also poses many challenges, not least of which is that of keeping the demands of ministry in check. We must minister from a reliance on the resources of the Kingdom of God, and so know the light burden and easy yoke that Jesus said would be ours. A day of retreat when we can give our undivided attention to the lord, listening for his personal word of nurture, encouragement or even rebuke, can be an oasis and much need place of restoration.
So, is it only leaders who need a retreat? The answer of-course is an absolute no!
Christian retreats or quiet days are a precious opportunity for any of us who are seeking to grow in our walk with the Lord, to take time away from our normal environment and the demands of our lives, and, having switched off our phone, enjoy undisturbed time with God. The reward for making such a choice is the joy of deep, life changing fellowship with the Lord. It can also be a time when we will more easily hear the Lord's challenge to us about the areas of our lives he longs to transform. Or indeed, a new direction he may want to lead us in. All in all it will be a precious experience of intimacy with God which is an astonishing thought when we consider who our great God is. |
Newly ordained minister. “ I am a young minister just staring out on a career that I have wanted to follow since I was a child. Today’s retreat day has reminded me why I want to be in ministry –– I want to know God and pass on an understanding of this amazing life that we can know if we follow God. Roz’s ability to open scripture and make it live is really very special. She also has a brilliant ability to discern what people need right in the moment when she is leading from the front. What a woman. I am leaving here today totally invigorated and hungry for more.” Working wife and mother “For the past four years I have attended numerous Cleopas retreats. I put the dates in my diary as soon as the new publicity arrives. The church has long needed someone with the gifting and vision that Roz has for these days of quiet reflection and prayer. As someone who leads a very busy and active life, these opportunities to give my full attention to the Lord without the distraction of my endless to do list are such a gift”. |
